About Lab Grown Diamonds
Lab grown diamonds are chemically, physically and visually the same as mined diamonds. They are not to be confused with diamond alternatives such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. As the name suggests, lab grown diamonds are grown in lab using one of two methods: high pressure, high temperature or chemical vapor deposition. Since they are grown in a lab, lab grown diamonds are much more affordable than natural mined diamonds. This allows people to save money or opt for a larger, higher quality diamond. Just like natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds come in many different shapes and sizes and are graded using the same 4C’s.
How are Lab Grown Diamonds Made
High Pressure, High Temperature vs. Chemical Vapor Deposition
HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature)
This methods seeks to mimic the process that natural diamonds undergo by using high pressure and high temperature to grow a diamond.
A diamond seed is placed in a chamber. and the growth chamber is heated to 1300 - 1600 degrees C with pressures rising above 870,000 pounds per square inch. Molten metal dissolves a high purity carbon source, carbon atoms from the carbon source precipitate and attach to the diamond seed and a synthetic diamond begins to grow.
CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)
This methods involves creating the diamond layer by layer, similar to a 3D printer. Diamond seed crystal are placed in a diamond growth chamber and the chamber is filled with a carbon containing gas and heater to 900 - 1200 degree C. A microwave beam causes carbon atoms to precipitate out of the gas and deposit onto the seed crystals. Often times the crystals need cleaned from black graphite through the process which results in a layer-by-layer growth process.
